<p>This research aimed to examine the optimal amount and method of incorporating duckweed (<i>Lemna gibba</i>) into the diets of ruminants, either by replacing it with alfalfa hay or by adjusting the energy and protein levels after replacement in the diet. The experimental treatments included a standard diet of fattening lambs containing 40% alfalfa as a control (without duckweed), in which 50%, 75%, or 100% of alfalfa hay was replaced by duckweed; or after replacing their energy and protein became the same. The amount of gas produced by the experimental samples was recorded at different times, the coefficients were estimated and fermentation parameters of gas production were calculated. In addition, the dry matter intake and dry matter intake digestibility, growth rate, and various other parameters were estimated using the gas production technique. The digestibility of dry matter and cell wall of experimental diets was also investigated by the two-stage digestion method. The gas production coefficients and all calculated production and fermentation parameters of duckweed were significantly higher than alfalfa hay (P &lt; 0.05). Compared to the control, the use of different amounts of duckweed as an alternative to alfalfa hay in ration, has a significant effect on the gas production coefficients and all calculated production and fermentation parameters; and these parameters were higher in isonitrogenous and isocaloric rations (ISO) than non-isonitrogenous and isocaloric rations (non-ISO). In vitro dry matter (DMD) and neutral detergent fiber digestibility (NDFD) were influenced by replacing duckweed with alfalfa hay (P &lt; 0.05). The lowest digestibility of dry matter and NDF was observed in the control treatment. The digestibility of dry matter and NDF was highest in ISO rations containing 40% duckweed. In general, the results of this experiment showed that at least 40% of the diet (equivalent to 75% substitution of duckweed instead of alfalfa hay) can be used in the diet of fattening lambs, and it’s better to adjusting energy and protein of diets (ISO).</p>
