Background <p>Neurophobia is a widely prevalent problem that affects medical students and healthcare providers globally. This can be associated with below-standard quality of initial evaluation and failed timely management of patients with neurologic presentations. This can pose serious consequences on patient care. However, the precise causes and mechanisms of neurophobia are still unknown; hence the purpose of this study.</p> Methods <p>Institution based cross-sectional study was conducted at Addis Ababa University, college of health science employing systematic random sampling with a sample size of 234. The data was collected through a self-administered structured online questionnaire. The data was then exported from Google format to Microsoft excel and cleaned before being uploaded to IBM SPSS version 27 for statistical analysis.</p> Result <p>A total of 217 students responded to the questionnaire, with a response rate of 92.7%. The prevalence of neurophobia among medical students in our study was 62.7%. Neurology was the most difficult speciality out of 7 subspecialties, and the second most interesting. Perceived level of knowledge in neuroscience, avoiding studying or seeking knowledge in neurology due to fear, and year of study of participants were the main factors affecting the prevalence of neurophobia in the study group. The complexity of neuroanatomy (77.4%), followed by the complexity of the physical examination (74%), the reputation of neurology as a difficult subject (66.2%), the poor outcomes of neurologic patients (49.6%), and, the participants’ lack of interest (39.7%) contributed to the participants’ neurophobia. Participants believed that more clinical case-based teaching (81.1%), interactive and engaging teaching methods (79.3%), and more exposure to neurologic patients (72.8%) would help improve their attitude and knowledge regarding neurology.</p> Conclusion <p>The study found that neurophobia was highly prevalent among medical students in accordance with previous studies. Enriching neurology lectures with more clinical case-based materials with frequent exposure to neurologic patients, and, close followup on students were the strategies recommended to improve the prevalence of neurophobia.</p>
