Background <p>Road traffic accidents (RTA-s) are a serious public health issue due to their widespread incidence and the likelihood of serious injuries. External and visible injuries such as fractures, amputations, and brain trauma are often treated immediately, but those that affect the pyramid bone especially the inner ear, are often not diagnosed.</p> Objective <p>This review aims to examine frequently overlooked inner ear injuries caused by RTAs and highlight their long-term health effects. The aim is to raise clinical awareness and promote routine assessment of the auditory and vestibular system after trauma.</p> Methods <p>This narrative review was conducted by searching PubMed, Scopus, Google Scholar, and Cochrane Library databases using keywords such as “inner ear trauma,” “road traffic accident,” “vestibular injury,” and “sensorineural hearing loss.” Articles published in English from January 2000 to March 2024 were included. Inclusion criteria were original research, review articles, and clinical guidelines focusing on auditory and vestibular damage following RTAs. Exclusion criteria included studies focusing on congenital ear disorders or non-traumatic hearing loss. Articles were selected based on relevance to clinical manifestations, diagnostic methods, and rehabilitation outcomes of inner ear injuries post-RTA.</p> Results <p>Inner ear structures such as the cochlea, vestibule, and semicircular canals are susceptible to direct and indirect trauma during RTA. The resulting symptoms such as dizziness, tinnitus, sensory hearing loss, and balance disorders can significantly impair daily functioning and quality of life. These symptoms often appear after a delay or mistakenly agree to other causes, which leads to diagnosis.</p> Conclusion <p>Injuries to the inner ear due to RTA are a hidden but serious problem. Early identification with thorough review after an accident can promote rapid intervention, thereby reducing chronic disorders. This review highlights the need to include inner ear assessments in daily post-RTA care protocols to improve rehabilitation outcomes and survivor well-being.</p>

Background
