Burns and scalds constitute frequent traumatic injuries that profoundly affect physical health of patients, quality of life, and psychological state. The repercussions of such injuries extend beyond the individual, imposing a significant burden on families and society, and in severe cases, can result in mortality. Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) provides a plenty of natural compounds renowned for their expedited therapeutic actions, low toxicity profiles, and economic viability. Therefore, TCM in the treatment of burns and scalds possesses considerable research implications and huge market potential. This review explores the pharmacological basis of herbal medicines for the treatment of burns and scalds with emphases on their anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, analgesic, antimicrobial, wound-healing and scar-minimizing effects. Additionally, the paper examines the impact of pivotal technologies, including the principles of compatibility, refinement, and formulation, on the therapeutic outcomes of TCM. It further outlines the current challenges encountered in this domain and proffers strategic solutions. This treatise aims to be an essential resource, to guide the further development and application of TCM in the therapeutic landscape of burns and scalds treatment.
