RETRACTED ARTICLE: Advanced diagnostic methods in oral and maxillofacial malignant neoplasms

Late detection of malignant neoplasms in the maxillofacial region indicates diagnostic deficiencies. The relevance of this problem indicates the need to improve diagnostic and prevention methods and increase the level of “oncological alertness” of both doctors and patients themselves.
ObjectivesThe objective of this review is to evaluate role of diagnostic advanced methods for detecting oral and maxillofacial neoplasms at the earliest stages.
MethodologyComprehensive search strategy. The systematic review included articles from Google Scholar, Medline, Scopus, Web of Sciences, PubMed was conducted to identify articles used for the diagnostic evaluation of head and neck cancer. 181 articles were found and, 110 articles of high methodological quality were selected for the synthesis of cancer diagnostics according to the review method used, the PRISMA. Two reviewer (DM,GH) authors screened the results of the searches against inclusion criteria, extracted data and assessed risk of bias independently and in duplicate.
Inclusion criteria: Trials were selected if they met the following mesh criteria: design—random assignment of participants; participants—any cancer patient undergoing surgery, chemotherapy or radiation therapy for cancer; diagnostics—toluidine blue staining, light detection methods chemiluminescence, fluorescence scintigography, ultrasound, X-rays, CT, MRI, positron emission tomography (PET), tumor marker, biopsy and/or histopathological evaluation written in English articles. There was no limitation on minimal quality, minimal sample size, or the number of patients.
Exclusion criteria were: Unpublished studies, conference abstracts, letters to the editor, case reports, in vitro and in vivo animal experimental studies to reduce publication bias. The effectiveness was evaluated by synthesizing relevant outcome data extracted from selected studies.
ResultsThe review describes modern achievements in methods for diagnosing tumors in the oral cavity and maxillofacial area. The most advanced methods are MRI, PET, tumor marker, immunohistopathological diagnostics. The results of the review can help improve the efficiency of cancer diagnosis and preventive complications in cancer patients. The relevance of this problem indicates the need to improve diagnostic and prevention methods, increase the level of “oncological alertness” of both doctors and patients themselves.
ConclusionsThe clinical and economic significance of early diagnosis and selection of the optimal treatment method for cancer patients determines the need to introduce the latest methods of cancer diagnosis, including analysis of the results of diagnostics.
