Assessing pedestrian perceptions and street vending in Srinagar, India using structural equation modelling

Street vending is a significant aspect of the informal economy in urban centers of developing nations, supplying critical goods and services while creating opportunities for employment for low-income residents. Although economically important, street vending poses issues for urban government, especially with pedestrian flow, traffic congestion, and infrastructure management. This study investigates pedestrian perceptions of street vending in Srinagar city, emphasizing their experiences and interpretations of its influence on urban life. The study utilizes a comprehensive analytical framework employing structural equation modeling (SEM) to investigate pedestrian perceptions. The study sample consisted of pedestrians from diverse backgrounds who routinely commute along the selected road segment in Srinagar city, India. Five principal constructs arise from the exploratory factor analysis: "Behavior and Attitude," "Pedestrian Traffic," "Perceptions of Sidewalk Conditions," "Pedestrian Level of Service," and "Street Vending," elucidating a substantial percentage of the variance in pedestrian perceptions. Validity and reliability assessments affirm the strength of these constructs. The present research indicates that good pedestrian attitudes enhance perceptions of street vending, whereas issues related to congestion, sidewalk conditions, and pedestrian mobility pose significant hurdles. These results highlight the necessity for efficient urban management techniques that reconcile the integration of street vendors with the facilitation of unobstructed pedestrian flow. This study elucidates pedestrian perceptions of street vending, offering significant information for politicians and urban planners. Strategic interventions, such as regulatory frameworks, defined vending areas, and infrastructural improvements, can enhance the advantages of street vending while alleviating its disadvantages. Ultimately, creating a well-regulated and inclusive urban environment can enhance the resilience and vibrancy of cityscapes, benefiting both street vendors and pedestrians.
