An evaluation of commuter’s perception of exposure to air pollution on a segment of Delhi Metro’s Magenta line

Delhi is considered one of the most polluted cities of the world hence any policy initiative towards improving the air quality is a priority. Rapid urbanization of Delhi has resulted in introduction of several means of transport. With government emphasis on improving air quality, planners are now looking at environment friendly modes. Amongst these, metro services are often perceived as one of the cleanest modes of transport in terms of emissions. The current paper evaluates the commuter’s perception of exposure to air pollution on a segment of Delhi Metro’s Magenta line via rankings given to various modes of commute. A relative Likert score of various modes based on their perceptions to exposure with respect to metro commute is also used for evaluation. Estimation results of multinomial logistic regression suggest that trip purpose, vehicle ownership, education, waiting time, occupation as well as the group formed based on Likert score based questions decides the choice between the mode of travel. Similarly, gender, distance and mode of travel are the significant variables whilst deciding the binary choice amongst the groups formed based on Likert scores. Transfer time, egress times, education as well as mode of travel determine the binary choice between groups formed based on the ranks given by commuters to various modes of travel. The obtained results were compared with the measured levels of pollutants namely PM1, PM2.5, PM10, Carbon monoxide and Black carbon in various modes. The measured run average of PM2.5 for two wheelers was found to be 41.9 µg/m3, 113.2 µg/m3 for auto-rickshaws, 68.9 µg/m3 with window open bus, 63.1 µg/m3 for window closed bus, 62.3 µg/m3 for window closed car, 71 µg/m3 for window open car, 34.2 µg/m3 for metro. The paper findings provide a reiteration to previous studies that advocated policy decisions for promoting segregated public transport considering the health perspective of commuters.
