Strength and durability assessment of lateritic soil stabilised with partial blend of calcium-based and agro-based additives for flexible pavement layers

In this study a lateritic soil in AASHTO class A-6 was stabilised with a partial blend of calcium-based and agro-based stabilisers. The calcium-based stabilisers are cement/lime while the agro-based stabilisers are rice husk ash (RHA), and oil palm empty fruit bunch ash (OPEFBA). The aim was to investigate the possibility of partially replacing calcium-based stabilisers with agro-based stabilisers to achieve satisfactory performance on strength and environmental sustainability. Index properties tests were conducted to classify the soil. Oxide contents tests were also done for the soil and the stabilisers. Compaction and unconfined compress test (UCT) were conducted for all the total binder content (TBC) from which six (6) optimum TBC were pre-selected. Further tests that comprise Atterberg limit, specific gravity, California Bearing Ration (CBR)—soaked and unsoaked, and durability tests were done for the 6 pre-selected TBC. Two of the 6 pre-selected TBC designated as Q-8 and Q-10 showed satisfactory performance on the specification limits by the Nigeria General Specifications for Roads and Bridges. With less embodied energy when compared to all-cement stabiliser, the two TBC can be used alternatively and sustainably in place of all-cement to stabilise similar deficient soil for flexible pavement layers.
