Environmental and socio-demographic factors associated with vector borne diseases in India

The present study conceptualizes the probability of vector-borne disease occurrence in the context of demographic, socioeconomic, and microenvironmental determinants. This study uses NSSO data from the 76th round to predict vector-borne diseases. A probit model has been used to analyse the determinants. Ten percent of the surveyed individuals reported having suffered from vector-borne diseases, and 11.82 and 7.61% of the population disclosed problems with stagnant water and human faeces around the house, respectively. In contrast, 81.73% of the households faced issues with flies and mosquitoes in the past year. Age, education, wealth index, sector, caste, and religion played an essential role in determining vector-borne diseases. Additionally, microenvironmental factors such as disposal of household garbage, households facing concerns of stagnant water, human excreta observable around the household, the existence of an animal shelter/poultry farm, and ventilation in the household also played a critical role in vector-borne diseases. Filling the existing research gaps regarding qualitative and implementation research, coupled with designing and strengthening intervention strategies for environmental sanitation and hygiene, is the need of the hour.
