Purpose <p>This research paper explores the concept of a Smart Citizen in the digital age, focusing on the UMEGA Model and the Nudge Approach. Smart citizens possess the necessary technological skills to make informed decisions in a smart country.</p> Design/methodology/approach <p>The paper uses Smart-PLS software to analyze survey questionnaire feedback and proposes a long-term solution for smart citizens’ decision-making role in sustainability.</p> Findings <p>The paper sets out to prove that of the UMEGA factors, motivation and social influence play the most important role in determining active citizen involvement, while perceived risks provide strong concerns capable of discouraging participation. Surprisingly, effort expectancy and empowerment also play important roles, but to a lesser degree. The study shows that low-key interventions such as reframing and taking advantage of social norms are effective in influencing the existence of citizens without undermining autonomy. These findings suggest that policymakers need to prioritize the establishment of social influence mechanisms and minimize perceived risks to try to build a more inclusive and sustainable city government.</p> Originality <p>A smart citizen will play a crucial role in adopting sustainable growth, with technology as a catalyst for creating a Smart Citizen. Purpose
