Optimizing nitrogen and phosphorus fertilization for enhanced potato yield and profitability in North Gondar, Ethiopia

Potato yields in North Gondar remain below the national average, largely due to inadequate soil nutrient management. A field experiment was conducted at Debark University in the 2024 irrigation season to identify economically optimal rates of nitrogen and phosphorus fertilizers for potato production. Four nitrogen (N) levels (0, 92, 115, 138 kg ha⁻¹) and four phosphorus (P) levels (0, 23, 34.5, 46 kg ha⁻¹) were tested in a factorial RCBD with three replications. Results showed that N and P interaction significantly influenced days to maturity and emergence. Plant height was highly responsive to both N (P ≤ 0.001) and P2O5 (P ≤ 0.01). Nitrogen application significantly increased marketable and total tuber yields, with the highest yields (32.71 t and 34.32 t ha⁻¹) at 138 kg N ha⁻¹. Phosphorus also significantly improved tuber number and yields, though its effect was less pronounced than N. The highest dry matter content (23.43%) was achieved with 46 kg P2O5 ha⁻¹. The most profitable combination was 138 kg N and 46 kg P2O5 ha⁻¹, yielding a net benefit of 613,173 ETB (≈$10757) and a marginal rate of return (MRR) of 152.36%. For budget-limited farmers, 115 kg N and 34.5 kg P2O5 ha⁻¹ provided a high net benefit (602,644 ETB) (≈$10572) and exceptional MRR (8729.78%). These recommendations support improved potato productivity and profitability in Debark and similar agro-ecologies.
