The Indiana University Student Outreach Clinic (IUSOC) is an interprofessional and multidisciplinary student-run free healthcare clinic. Within this clinic, the Patient Navigation (PN) plays a vital role in assisting patients with accessing primary care, specialty care, imaging, and health insurance. This study aims to characterize the success of the PN team through understanding the timeline of PN to patient contact and outcomes of insurance acquisition. From January to March 2024, 226 patients seen at the IUSOC were included in this study. Of 100 referrals to the PN team with a mean patient age of 53.08 (SD 11.5), 67% of referrals were contacted and the average time to contact by the PN team after referral was 8 ± 23 days. 50% (N = 50) of referred patients scheduled appointments with Indiana Rural Health Association (IRHA) for insurance acquisition, of which 31 appointments were completed, and 10 appointments were classified as “No-Shows.” 12 insurance applications were submitted, of which 75% of applications were for Medicaid-Emergency Services Only. The two-tiered referral system from the IUSOC to PN team to IRHA agency poses bottlenecks including time to contact by the PN team and “No-Shows” to IRHA appointments, alluding to potential barriers in communication, the use of technology in virtual appointments, and limited appointment times. This study provides critical insight into the Patient Navigation process and health insurance enrollment, including improvements to enhance the quality of patient care.

摘要
