Experimental study on tribological behaviour of seashell powder-reinforced epoxy composites

The recent demand for sustainable and eco-friendly materials has motivated the exploration of bio-based reinforcements in polymer composites. The aim of this work is to investigate the wear behavior of seashell powder-reinforced polymer composites. Seashells, generally regarded as marine waste, has a high content of calcium carbonate (CaCO₃) and are known to possess superior rigidity as well as hardness and can be an attractive form of reinforcing material for friction and wear applications. Composites were prepared by adding different weight percentages of milled shell powder to the polymer matrix, followed by classical moulding. The experimental results indicated that there was a remarkable improvement in wear resistance performance and a reduction in values of the coefficient of friction upon increasing the filler content to an optimum level but further increases in filler content were detrimental to their properties.
