Special education teachers’ coping and resilience in two times of crisis
摘要
Resilience is the process of adapting effectively in the face of adversity. In times of crisis, individuals draw on internal and external resources to cope, facilitating their resilience. Special education teachers (SET), who already face high levels of stress and burnout, may find crises especially challenging. This study qualitatively explored Israeli SET’ coping during the COVID-19 pandemic and the Iron Swords war. The COVID-19 sample included 23 teachers (Mage = 34.3) who were interviewed; the wartime sample included 260 teachers (Mage = 38.09) who responded online to open-ended questions. Thematic analysis identified two consistent categories of coping resources: internal (psychological capital, sense of mission, belief) and external (social support). Though the themes remained the same across crises, their frequency varied. The prominent role of belief during wartime highlights the potential of faith-based interventions, while the overall consistency of resilience resources suggests they should be strengthened even in non-crisis times.
