Resilience of traditional coastal housing: defining productive space in Joglo Juwana through spatial configuration and intrapersonal distance
摘要
Coastal joglo is an integral part of the social and economic life of coastal communities in Java, particularly in Juwana, which has developed along the Pantura route as a regional economic distribution hub. With modernization, the function of coastal joglo has a huge probability shifted from traditional housing to hybrid spaces that accommodate social interaction and productive activities. With reference to the results of previous research, this study aims to analyse how the spatial configuration of coastal Joglo houses can identify social and economy potential through a spatial syntax approach in previous research and overlaying it with proxemic theory. The analysis was conducted by mapping spatially using Justified Plan Graph and interpreting social distance to understand negotiations in certain types of spatial configurations. The results of the study indicate that there are spatial configurations with greater flexibility in accommodating home-based economic activities without compromising the privacy of residents. Meanwhile, less adaptive configurations require both physical and non-physical strategies. With this, modernization of the spatial aspects of Joglo Juwana can be directed to continue supporting the social and economic sustainability of coastal communities.
