<p>Technology connects people from diverse cultural and linguistic backgrounds, yet effective communication requires a deep understanding of the sociocultural norms embedded in language. Foreign language education is evolving to develop social awareness and intercultural competence in innovative and engaging learning environments. However, digital resources that broaden intercultural skills remain limited. This article examines the potential of a virtual learning environment (VLE) in the metaverse to enhance Spanish language skills and intercultural communicative competence (ICC). Developed as part of a master’s thesis in applied linguistics in Aotearoa New Zealand, using design-based research (DBR), the VLE consists of 13 virtual auditoriums and four art galleries featuring extended reality (XR) spaces. These spaces showcase videos of a native Spanish speaker portraying Frida Kahlo, accompanied by supplementary activities to foster self-directed learning and deepen intercultural understanding. A panel of Spanish teachers, adult learners, and technology specialists evaluated the prototype, refining the platform and establishing design principles for enhancing ICC and self-directed learning.</p>
