<p>This discussion of Michael Beaney’s <i>The Joy of Chinese Philosophy</i> pursues two aims. The first is to draw attention to a dimension of the happy fish dialogue in the <i>Zhuangzi</i> that has passed unnoticed in the literature: non-ideal epistemic agency. The second is to show that this dimension lends additional support to Beaney’s interpretation, given that his reading proves well suited to making sense of it.</p>
