Visualization of color-emotion associations found in past studies using correspondence analysis and independent subspace analysis
摘要
Color–emotion associations identified in previous studies and summarized by Jonauskaite and Mohr (2025, Psychonomic Bulletin & Review, 32, 1457–1486) were visualized using a 6-dimensinal biplot by correspondence analysis. The biplot was rotated using independent subspace analysis. The first two dimensions were dominant compared with the others, and the configurations were similar between the non-rotated and rotated cases. They were roughly circularly arranged, and the color-emotion associations represented in this plane may be mediated by perceived activeness. In the rotated configuration, Dimensions 3–6 correspond to the following color-emotion associations reported in some studies that are not explained by the first two dimensions: brown/gray-gloominess, pink-romance/love, black-distress, and desaturated colors-worry/fright. The obtained configuration provides a visual, intuitive summary of the color-emotion associations identified in previous studies. Furthermore, some insights that are difficult to obtain from color-emotion association data (e.g., yellow, orange, and pink are similar in color-emotion association and are associated with happy emotions; however, pink is also associated with love) can be readily obtained from the configuration.
