The influence of symbolic, customary, and ritualistic of Pulut Kuning on Malay societal practices with the moderating effects of education and evolving lifestyle
摘要
This study empirically explores the extent to which culinary heritage operates as a symbol, custom, and ritual within societal practices. It further investigates the moderating influence of education and lifestyle on the relationship between culinary heritage and societal practices. Anchored in existing literature, the research constructs an integrated framework to evaluate whether Pulut Kuning, as a manifestation of culinary heritage, continues to embody symbolic, customary, and ritualistic functions within contemporary Malay society, and how these roles are mediated by educational background and evolving lifestyle patterns. Utilizing data from 203 ethnic Malays, the study employs Partial Least Squares Structural Equation Modeling (PLS-SEM) to assess the proposed model and test its hypotheses. Findings reveal that while Pulut Kuning retains cultural salience, its role has transitioned from functional to predominantly symbolic, influenced by modernization, educational progress, and lifestyle shifts. Its customary and symbolic relevance remains moderate, whereas its ritualistic function has notably declined. Educational attainment and lifestyle evolution emerge as significant moderating variables that reconfigure the nexus between culinary heritage and societal practices. These findings highlight the adaptive nature of culinary heritage amid dynamic sociocultural transformations and underscore the imperative of aligning preservation efforts with contemporary values and societal norms.
