Exploring the nutritional, environmental and economic potential of mycoprotein in aquaculture

The rising demand for sustainable and nutritionally balanced aquafeeds has led to exploring alternative protein sources to traditional fishmeal and plant-based proteins. Mycoprotein, a fungal-derived protein, has emerged as a promising candidate due to its high protein content, well-balanced amino acid profile, and potential functional benefits for aquatic species. Its production through fermentation offers a lower environmental footprint, reducing the stress on marine and other animal resources while addressing the challenges associated with conventional protein sources. Integrating mycoprotein into commercial aquaculture could contribute to a more sustainable and resilient industry by decreasing reliance on traditional protein sources. This review provides a comprehensive analysis of mycoprotein in aquaculture, focusing on its origin, production, nutritional value, and potential health benefits for aquatic species. Additionally, it examines key environmental and economic considerations, highlighting both the opportunities and challenges associated with its adoption in the aquafeed industry.
