One reason for this may be that it is mainly treated in specialized disciplines such as angiology, vascular surgery, interventional radiology or interventional pain therapy; however, the prevalence of critical limb ischemia is high, associated with a&#xa0;high risk of amputation and a&#xa0;high mortality rate, with the risk increasing with age. Peripheral arterial occlusive disease (PAOD) is therefore one of the most common causes of chronic pain in the lower extremities, which is the central topic of this article.</p>
