<p> With growing awareness of the need for stricter indication criteria in order to prevent overtreatment and its harmful consequences, the topic of changing treatment goals timely is gaining importance. To carry out such changes in treatment goals lege artis, physicians should not only have internalized the relevant ethical and legal fundamentals of complex medical decision making, but also be able to apply them in practice as consistently as the principles of compassionate and at the same time unambiguous communication.</p>
