The optimal ventilation strategy during cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) is the subject of an ongoing debate. Chest compression synchronized ventilation (CCSV) aligns pressure-controlled ventilation precisely with ongoing chest compressions and shows promising effects on gas exchange and hemodynamics in animal studies and preliminary human data. A current study by the Emergency Medical Service Vienna, Austria, investigates its feasibility in the prehospital setting. This article summarizes current evidence, highlights physiological rationale, and shows future perspectives of standardized intra-arrest ventilation.
