<p>The choice of suitable antibiotic therapy is based on an immediate microbiological diagnosis. If the pathogen spectrum is unclear, broad-spectrum antibiotics are the primary treatment option. If the culture results are clear, antibiotic therapy can be switched to substances with a&#xa0;narrower pathogen spectrum. Procalcitonin (PCT) is suitable for assessing the success of treatment for most bacterial infections. However, a&#xa0;single determination of PCT is not meaningful, as it can “lag” behind the clinical course.</p>
