The Influence of an Adhesive Protocol on the Adhesion of Biodentine to Resin-Matrix Composites

Biodentine™ is a calcium silicate-based cement often applied prior to a resin-matrix composite restoration. However, there is a lack of data on the adhesive interface between Biodentine™ and resin-matrix composites and the success of the clinical procedure. The aim of this scoping review was to compare the effect of different adhesive procedures on the bond strength of resin-matrix composites to Biodentine™. A bibliographic review was performed on PubMed with the following search terms: Biodentine OR calcium AND shear bond strength AND resin composite OR composites. The search encompassed articles published in English language within the last 10 years. The bibliographical search resulted in 156 articles from which 19 articles were selected. The results demonstrated that the acidic etching leads to a higher bond strength between Biodentine™ and resin-matrix composites. Other studies reported that self-etch adhesives with a functional monomer, namely 10-MDP, showed a shear bond strength similar to that of total-etch adhesives. Furthermore, restorative procedures with a conventional resin-matrix composite utilizing self-etch or total etch adhesives systems demonstrated a higher shear bond strength comparatively to a self-adhesive resin-matrix composite. A broad variety of clinical guidelines with different adhesive systems and types of resin-matrix composites leads to an inconclusive comparison among studies.
