Exploring the Potential of Metal-Loaded Sutures in Preventing Surgical Site Infections: A Review

Sutures are a well-known medical tool used in surgery and wound closure. Sutures are not only limited to their traditional use but are also used for sustained drug delivery. A new generation of sutures has emerged with a metal loading scaffold, which helps prevent surgical site infections caused by traditional sutures made of natural origin. The metals are known to have good antimicrobial activity when combined with sutures alone or with drug-loaded sutures, increasing mechanical strength and durability, which gives long-term antimicrobial activity that surpasses the need to take additional antimicrobial agents, which may become ineffective against bacteria. Antibiotic resistance can also be reduced with the help of metal-loaded sutures. New generation, metal-loaded sutures with drug-eluting properties can be achieved by the electrospinning process.
