Liposomes and Niosomes in Psoriasis Therapy: Emerging Vesicular Approaches for Targeted Treatment

Liposomes and niosomes, as advanced nanocarriers, have shown promise in enhancing topical treatment for psoriasis. Psoriasis, a chronic inflammatory skin condition, involves complex immune system dysfunction and accelerated skin cell turnover. This chapter delves into the pathophysiology, exploring immune-related triggers and environmental factors contributing to its development. Pharmacotherapy, often limited by systemic side effects and suboptimal efficacy, faces challenges in managing psoriasis due to the need for long-term treatment and patient adherence issues. This review demonstrates how cutting-edge drug delivery technologies, such as niosomes and liposomes, offer prolonged and targeted drug release, enhancing therapeutic results. These vesicular systems allow deeper skin penetration, which lowers the dosage needed and minimizes adverse effects. They also encapsulate active substances, shielding them from destruction. Both are phospholipid-based vesicles, and niosomes, which are formed from non-ionic surfactants, are important components of the prolonged release of medications, enhancing patient comfort and bioavailability. Challenges related to liposome and niosomes toxicity are addressed, as well as the advances made in clinical trials exploring these systems. The review also includes latest research showing how well liposomes and niosomes work to improve skin hydration, lessen psoriasis symptoms, and encourage long-term remission. All of this helps the researchers learn more about the precise function that niosomes and liposomes play in psoriasis and further their investigation into these nanocarrier-based formulations.
