Pathways of Adverse Effect on the Blood-Testis Barrier by Environmental Pollutants

Blood-testis barrier (BTB) is a very important ultrastructure between germinal tubules and the blood vessels. The damage of BTB will lead to reduce sperm counts, decreased sperm motility and sperm malformations. Currently, some environmental pollutants have been implicated with BTB risk, such as perfluorooctanoic acid, microplastics, heavy metals etc. Although the underlying mechanism by which environmental pollutants induces BTB dysfunction is unknown, several pathways associated with environmental pollutants have been linked to damage of BTB. In this review, we analyze the effects of different types of environmental pollutants on BTB production and reveals their potential mechanisms of action, as well as summarize the relationship between various pollutants and male reproductive dysfunction. Various pollutants adversely affect male fertility through several pathways were discussed, including autophagy, oxidative stress, F-actin disorder, mitogen-activated protein kinase signal pathway, focal adhesion kinase and its signaling pathway, mammalian target of rapamycin signaling pathway, and related to androgen receptor/estrogen receptor.
