Bibliometric and content analysis of global toilet research and inclusive sanitation
摘要
Accessing a toilet is a fundamental right, so gender-inclusive toilet policies must promote hygiene, gender equality, and dignity. This study aims to identify the major trends in toilet research, as revealed by bibliometrics, and to understand the themes and future trends through content analysis.
MethodsA quantitative technique involving bibliometric and content analysis was conducted through a systematic process, utilizing metric data obtained from the Scopus database, which comprised 1614 documents published between 1946 and 2023. The keywords were filtered to “toilet”, “gender-neutral toilet”, and “all-gender toilet”, and the Open Knowledge Map was used for consolidating the keywords. Regarding the bibliometric, RStudio (Biblioshiny) was used for performance analysis, identifying themes, and clustering data, while Publish and Perish software was employed for rankings. VOSviewer was utilized for network visualization. Regarding content analysis, Atlas.ti was used for automatic coding, and NVivo was used for content visualization.
ResultsThe findings reveal that research on gender-inclusive toilets is understudied. So, attention is needed regarding all-gender toilets and cultural aspects. Most empirical data emphasize health and women’s toilet access, however, there is a limited focus on men toilets and LGBTQ+ inclusivity.
ConclusionBased on the analysis, gaps identified for future research are: (a) hygiene and dignity in toilet access, (b) all-gender and gender-neutral toilet focus, (c) gender inclusive toilet policies, and (d) cultural perspectives in toilet research.
Policy implicationsThis review underscores the importance of gender-inclusive toilet policies and empirical research on accommodating gender minorities to ensure fundamental rights and achieve SDG 6.
