Correlation of social ages and BMI centiles among children aged 5 to 15 years with and without disability from a rural community in Karnataka, India

Vineland Adaptive Behavioural Scales have been used to evaluate social ages in children. Social age has shown varied correlations to Nutritional status among children and adolescents. The study aimed to correlate Social Ages and Quotients with nutritional parameters like Body Mass Index (BMI) in children aged 5–15 with and without disabilities in a rural community in Karnataka, India, using Vineland Adaptive Behavioural Scales.
Methods and materialA cross-sectional analytical study was conducted on 145 children with disabilities and 145 children without disabilities, aged 5–15 years, in a rural community in Karnataka. The Bharath Raj’s Indian Adaptation Vineland Social Maturity Scale (VSMS) was used for interviews between February 2014 and February 2015. Two scoring methods, “Total correct score match method (TCSM)” and “Add months to year-wise (AMTY),” were utilised, and Socio-demographic characteristics and nutritional parameters were correlated with Social Age. The data was analysed in MS Excel using SPSS v 29 using Spearman's correlation, with results reported at a significance level of P < 0.05.
ResultsThe study found a negative correlation between social and chronological ages among children with disabilities. This suggests a decline in social Maturity with age, using similar social ages in both TCSM and AMTY methods. However, children without disabilities showed a positive correlation with social and chronological age, suggesting they have an advantage over disabled peers in both TCSM and AMTY methods. Other factors like age, socioeconomic status, calorie intake, and BMI did not show a significant correlation. This indicates that Social determinants of health, including social support and environmental factors, play a more crucial role in shaping social development than nutritional or socioeconomic status.
ConclusionChildren without disabilities show a positive age correlation, while those with disabilities show a negative correlation. There is a possible benefit of early interventions for social development for children with disabilities. Factors like gender, BMI, and socioeconomic status don’t significantly impact social age.
