Connecting the gap between architectural education and practice in Egypt: users’ perspectives analysis and recommendations

This study examines the gap between architectural education and practice in Egypt to improve graduate employability. Grounded in Human Capital Theory and Experiential Learning Theory, this mixed-methods investigation surveyed 130 participants comprising 70 students from six universities, 30 faculty from five institutions, and 29 practitioners from 15 architectural firms. Data were collected via structured questionnaires (December 2024-February 2025) and analyzed using descriptive statistics and thematic analysis. Results reveal substantial curriculum-industry misalignment, with 65% of participants reporting critical competency gaps. Current programs emphasize theoretical knowledge while inadequately addressing practical skills: only 28% successfully integrate emerging technologies such as BIM, and only 32% of students report adequate software training despite 88% demanding it. Comparative analysis revealed systematic perception hierarchies across five evaluation criteria, with practitioners rating programs highest (M = 4.70), academics intermediate (M = 4.22), and students lowest (M = 3.42)37.4% divergence. Skills Acquisition showed the largest gap (56.7% divergence), while practitioner satisfaction with project management training was lowest (M = 2.2). This multi-stakeholder analysis provides the first comprehensive quantification of Egypt’s education- practice gap and proposes an evaluation framework with evidence-based recommendations for curriculum reform, technology integration, and industry partnerships to enhance graduate employability.
