Re-imagining vernacular courtyard logic in contemporary architectural engineering: towards climate-responsive design in the Indian context

This paper examines the reinterpretation of vernacular courtyards within contemporary Indian architecture and urban design. Traditionally, courtyards enabled passive climate regulation, supported social interaction, and embedded cultural practices across regions. Today, rapid urbanisation and high-density vertical growth have marginalised these spatial forms, leading to energy-intensive and socially fragmented environments. Through qualitative synthesis of secondary literature, scientific studies, and case analyses, the study explores how courtyard principles can be reimagined in modern contexts. Case studies—ranging from early exemplars (1960–1990 s) to transitional works (2000–2010 s) and recent high-rise projects (2020s)—demonstrate new adaptations such as modular clusters, vertical atria, and bioclimatic zoning. While the study relies on secondary sources that are based on empirical studies, it positions itself as a foundation for further rationale ensuring applicability for both scholarship and practice. Findings confirm that courtyards are not nostalgic relics but scientifically validated, climate-smart systems that reduce energy demand, mitigate urban heat, and strengthen community cohesion. The proposed Five-Fold Strategy Framework offers a structured roadmap for embedding courtyard-based design in urban development, positioning courtyards as resilient and inclusive solutions for 21st-century Indian cities.
