Internet of things applications for advancing sustainable development goals in Indonesia

The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) are a global agenda, and the Internet of Things (IoT) is one of the key enabler for their achievement. This systematic review investigates the role, impact, and challenges of the Internet of Things (IoT) for achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in Indonesia. Following PRISMA guidelines, we searched the Scopus database for peer-reviewed articles, including conference papers, published in English that address IoT implementation for SDGs in Indonesia; no formal risk of bias assessment was performed, and findings were synthesized thematically. From the search, 21 articles met the inclusion criteria. The results indicate that IoT significantly contributes to SDG 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities), SDG 9 (Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure), SDG 3 (Good Health and Well-being), and SDG 7 (Affordable and Clean Energy), with environmental monitoring being the most prominent application field. While IoT adoption demonstrably enhances disaster resilience and optimizes resource management, its widespread implementation is hindered by challenges such as inadequate infrastructure, high costs, and limited technical skills. A primary limitation of the evidence presented is its reliance on a single database. Ultimately, overcoming the identified barriers requires infrastructure investment, capacity building, and multi-stakeholder collaboration to ensure sustainable IoT implementation in Indonesia.
