Comprehensive review and bibliometric analysis of sustainable approaches for textile wastewater treatment

Due to the consumption of huge amount of water in textile industries, there is a major concentration of wastewater containing dyes, salts, surfactants and other organic compounds with complex structure. Consequently, the wastewater is having high levels of biological oxygen demand and chemical oxygen demand along with persistent colour. Conventional end-of-pipe treatment approaches lack in removal and cost effectiveness. Therefore, approach towards textile wastewater treatment is heading for sustainability and prevention methods. The current review provides a comprehensive review for evaluating sustainable approaches towards textile industries supported by a bibliometric analysis. A bibliometrixtool was applied to study the trends in publication, keyword patterns, network collaboration and research hotspots from the year 2013 to 2025. The narrative review explores sustainable interventions, including source reduction, green chemistry, water reuse and recycling, resource recovery, and treatment technologies such as biological systems, adsorption, membrane processes, advanced oxidation processes, and hybrid systems. Studies investigated at experimental and pilot scales show that combining prevention and recovery methods can greatly lower pollutant levels, reduce freshwater use, and lessen the overall environmental impact.
