Sustainable AI integration in research: ethics, equity, and long-term impact
摘要
With AI tools becoming increasingly integrated in research practices, researchers have to encounter important decisions regarding their responsible adoption and use. These choices are important to ensure innovation is sustainable and ethically sound in the long term. Though AI can increase productivity and research, there are ethical concerns related to fairness, bias, and research integrity. Here, fairness refers to equitable treatment and unbiased outcomes in research by ensuring that AI-generated results do not favour or discriminate against any particular groups or perspectives. Bias refers to the unrepresentative training data or algorithmic tendencies that can lead to unfair or skewed research outputs, affecting research validity and equity. This study explores the current usage of AI tools by identifying AI’s use in researchers' practice, ethical considerations, and the impact of AI on quality, productivity, and equity. Quality in research refers to the accuracy, validity, and overall integrity of outputs in research. Productivity pertains to the efficiency and output levels of the researcher, and equity refers to fair access to AI tools and resources among the researchers from various institutions or backgrounds. The study also explores the factors influencing the adoption of these tools for AI, the challenges related to attribution, research integrity, and mitigation of bias, the consequences of using AI for long-term research training, and the dissipation of knowledge for equitable access to research resources. This study aims to inform the development of sustainable AI policies that promote responsible use of AI in research by ensuring that it can benefit the global research community. The researchers used a mixed methodology of taking responses by survey, interview, and quantitative and qualitative data analysis. The implication of this study will be the formulation of informed AI policy development for more effective and ethical research. In addition. The study will contribute by guiding to creating training programs that promote responsible and ethical use of AI in research, thus improving researchers’ understanding and application of AI tools. Hence, this study will shape the future of research by promoting the integration of AI to foster innovation and ensure sustainability in research.
