Building a sustainable agribusiness in Bangladesh
摘要
Sustainable agribusiness plays a vital role in promoting rural development, food security, and environmental sustainability in developing countries like Bangladesh. This case study examines the entrepreneurial journey of Osman Gani and the development of Oiktan Agro in Bhola, Bangladesh, during the period from 2019 to 2024. Osman Gani, originally an electrical engineer, entered the agricultural sector during the COVID-19 pandemic and established Oiktan Agro, a sustainable agribusiness enterprise. Through strategic diversification, vertical integration, and digitalization, Osman transformed a small family-owned farm into a multipurpose venture centered on dairy farming, meat processing, and vermicompost production. He was able to generate an average net income of around 20 lakh BDT per year within a short period of time. Data and information for this case study were collected through direct interviews, field observations, and secondary sources including news reports and organizational records. The case demonstrates how entrepreneurial sustainability, innovation, and adaptability can contribute to rural transformation by ensuring food security and reducing environmental degradation at the local level. It also highlights the role of green production practices and mobile technology in enhancing market competitiveness and long-term sustainability in the agricultural sector. The study recommends greater institutional support, digital training, and financial assistance for rural agro-entrepreneurs to promote sustainable agribusiness development in Bangladesh.
