Solid waste generation in the Moroccan hotel industry and its governing factors across hotel categories on the Atlantic and Mediterranean coasts
摘要
In this study, we evaluated the solid waste generated by hotels on the Atlantic and Mediterranean coasts of Morocco to present the first and comparative data on a national scale. Data was collected by questionnaire and field measurements. We investigated the characteristics of hotels, location, categories, and certificates. We estimated the quantity of solid waste generated by hotels, the collection rate, and the waste sorting process. The collected data were analyzed with univariate and multivariate statistics. In total, 69 hotels were sampled, with dominance of 4-star hotels (48%), followed by 3 stars (34%), and 5 stars (18%) (p < 0.05). In the Mediterranean, 11.00% of hotels were certified compared to 22.00% in the Atlantic. The highest quantity of solid waste was generated by hotels in Casablanca with 942 ± 742kg/day, while the lowest value was recorded in Tetouan, 244 ± 253 kg/day, respectively. The highest quantities were produced by 5-star with 910 ± 696 kg/day, while the lowest quantities were produced by 3-star with 227 ± 189 kg/day. The quantities of solid waste were significantly higher in the hotels on the Mediterranean basin compared to the Atlantic. The principal component analysis showed that in Casablanca and Essaouira, the higher quantities of waste were produced by 5-star hotels, in Al Hoceima and Agadir, the hotels of 3 stars produced higher quantities of solid waste, while in Tanger, the higher quantities of solid waste were produced by 4-star hotels. The collection rates of solid waste were significantly governed by hotel categories and their geographical location (cities). These data are first and present new insight into the negative impacts of tourism in Morocco.
