Evaluating urban green spaces as catalysts for sustainable urbanization by integrating environmental health and social development

Urban green spaces (UGS) are vital components of promoting sustainability in urban development. It provides environmental, social, and health benefits to city inhabitants. This study examines the environmental and social performances of green spaces in Lahore, i.e., the botanical garden at Jallo Park, Jilani Park, Miyawaki Forest, and Jail Road Green Belt. The i-Tree Eco-tool was employed to quantify and evaluate the regulatory ecosystem services provided by the selected green spaces. A Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) was conducted to analyze environmental impacts during the establishment and annual maintenance phases of the selected UGS. A questionnaire survey was conducted to evaluate employees’ working conditions and the satisfaction of common visitors. i-Tree Eco results showed that Miyawaki Forest generated the highest level of ecosystem services per sq meter, including carbon storage (20 kg/yr), carbon sequestration (3.1379 kg/yr), water interception (0.153790 m³/yr), and oxygen generation (8.37066 kg/yr), compared to the Botanical Garden at Jallo Park, Jilani Park, and Green Belt Jail Road. The LCA results indicated that several environmental impacts were generated during the establishment phase of the Miyawaki forest, including CO2e emissions (99.9%), freshwater ecotoxicity (95.7%), and ozone creation (99.7%). However, the Miyawaki Forest had the lowest maintenance-phase impacts among the studied sites. Both employees and citizens acknowledged the importance and the ecosystem benefits of the chosen urban green spaces in the city, according to the analysis of the questionnaire survey. The findings underscore the need for policy interventions to expand UGS coverage in Lahore. A way forward includes integrating environmental, ecosystem service, and social performance evaluation into urban planning initiatives to make informed, inclusive, and sustainable green space development in Lahore.
