Facilitators and barriers in job application processes among persons with vision and physical disabilities in Ethiopia
摘要
Disability can influence various aspects of everyday life, with personal, societal, and environmental factors all shaping individual experiences. Persons with disabilities continue to receive unequal access to employment facilities, notwithstanding workplace diversity laws. These lived experiences do not stand alone; they point to a larger structural issue that is directly related to numerous Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), including SDG 8 (Decent Work and Economic Growth) and SDG 10 (Reduced Inequalities). Therefore, this study aimed to explore the experiences of persons with physical and vision disabilities regarding the challenges and facilitators they encounter when applying for jobs. A descriptive-phenomenological design was employed, using a qualitative research approach. For the in-depth interview, 15 persons with disabilities and 2 FGDs (8 participants in each) from Mizan-Aman Town, Ethiopia, were selected. The findings revealed that facilitators of employment for persons with disabilities during the job application process were the availabilities of different international and national conventions, proclamations, and additional benefits or affirmative actions. The challenges faced by persons with disabilities during job application were the negative attitudes of employers and societies and the inaccessibility of vacancy related information. This work makes a contribution to the social model of disability and literature on employment facilitators and challenges of persons with disabilities. By documenting these facilitators and barriers in Ethiopia context, this study not only confirms but also extends the social model of disability by highlighting how context-specific social and employer challenges affect persons with vision and physical disabilities during job application in Ethiopia.
