Sustainability and resilience for infrastructure systems have been a priority for federal and state agencies in the last decade. Numerous studies have been seen in this area but most lack consistent definition and quantification. The purpose of this research is to explore and synthesize the various definitions and quantifications associated with sustainability and resilience, and their interconnected nature. This research presents a comprehensive literature review and synthesis by understanding and analyzing the literature content on the subject and finding themes and consistencies among different studies. This research found a wide array of definitions and quantifications associated with sustainability and resilience. However, the comprehensibility and standardization of the concept use, and evaluation/quantification was lacking. Furthermore, there have been varied perceptions in the adoption of both sustainability and resilience. Therefore, various definitions, quantifications, and perceptions were explored through this research, and a standardized definition and quantification was proposed to ensure the same level of understanding by the infrastructure stakeholders. This research synthesizes the existing literature to propose a novel approach to link sustainability and resilience for infrastructure projects which can help stakeholders follow a more standardized approach to incorporating sustainability and resilience in their future infrastructure projects. Future research can use the outcomes of this research to create a comprehensive resilience quantification metric that is rooted within well established guidelines for resilience.

摘要
