<p>The study aims to assess the impact of climate change induced drought on the rural livelihoods of households in Beyeda woreda. The study used explanatory research design and mixed research methods. Survey data was collected from 123 households. In addition, 43&#xa0;years’ meteorological data was downloaded from CHIRPS. The analysis was conducted by descriptive statistics, standardized precipitation index and reduced coping strategies index using STATA 15 and SPI generator tool. Results showed that the mean yearly rainfall of the study area was 990.2&#xa0;mm. The SPI analysis shows that 46.5% of the studied years were negative anomaly years, which refers to below-normal conditions compared to a historical average. The frequency of drought was high, happening every 1.15&#xa0;years. The study area households rely on rain fed dependent crop and livestock production with a limited experience of irrigation based agriculture. Almost all of the households testified the impact of drought in the crop and livestock production. The households practiced diverse stress, crises and emergency coping strategies to fight against the drought. Reduction of non-food expenses, borrowing of money and food and spending of savings were the main coping strategies implemented. The reduced coping strategies index result revealed that around 98% of the households were found with varied levels of food insecurity; 7%, 85% and 6% were marginally, moderately and severely food insecure respectively. The study concludes that rainfall exhibits high variability with no consistent trend in the study area. It is also implied that drought has created a significant negative impact in the rural livelihoods of the households. Short and long-term drought management initiatives including soil and water conservation, agricultural risk insurance and diversification are recommended to protect the lives and livelihoods of the households. Furthermore, necessary food security based interventions are critical to fill the food gaps created due to drought.</p>
