Evaluating the effect of production systems on growth, carcass evaluation, intestinal biometry and digesta pH of Indigenous Venda chickens

The effect of two production systems on Venda chicken growth, carcass, internal organ weights, intestinal biometry, and digesta pH were investigated. One-hundred-day-old, unsexed Venda chickens were allotted to two treatments (T1: intensive production system and T2: semi-intensive production system) with 50 chicks per treatment in a completely randomized design. Birds on each treatment had 5 replicates, with each replicate consisting of 10 chicks. Birds were offered ad libitum standard starter (d 1–49) and grower (d 50–91) diets. At the end of experiment, 10 chickens were selected from each group and slaughtered to evaluate their growth performance, carcass, internal organ, intestinal biometry, and digesta pH. The results revealed that chickens on T2 had better (p < 0.05) final live weights, feed intake, body weight gain (BWG), and feed conversion ratio (FCR) than the chickens on T1. Likewise, chickens on T2 had significantly higher (p < 0.05) carcass yield, dressing percentage, breast, thigh, and drumstick weight than chickens on T1. In addition, chickens in the T2 group had significantly higher (p < 0.05) length and digesta pH of the small intestine than the T1 group. In contrast, initial live weight, abdominal fat, internal organs, length of large intestine, digesta pH of the crop, gizzard, proventriculus, large intestine, and caecum were not altered by production systems. Based on these findings, semi-intensive production system is recommended as it improved growth indices, carcass, and small intestine length in Venda chickens, without compromising internal organ weights and digesta pH.
