A bibliometric analysis of extreme weather events and nutritional outcomes

The impacts of extreme weather events (EWEs) on public health have emerged as a prominent research topic over the last two decades. However, bibliometric analyses exploring the relationship between climate events and nutrition are still limited. This study aims to outline existing research on extreme climate and nutrition by examining spatial and temporal signatures.
MethodMeta-data from Scopus and Web of Science (1990–2024) was used to analyze research publications on extreme climate events and nutrition. Various bibliometric and visualization techniques (like bar graphs) were employed to derive the results.
ResultsThe geographical distribution reveals that extreme climate and nutrition research publications are primarily concentrated in High-Income Countries (HICs), with recent growth observed in Low- and Middle-Income Countries (LMICs). The mean citation score of 22 indicates significant contributions to the scientific domain. However, a citation lag has been observed since 2009, indicating the maturation of the field. Notably, the Sustainability journal by MDPI has emerged as a leading publisher. Over time, research focus has shifted from physical aspects to interlinkages in extreme climate events, food security, and nutrition, with a recent research inclination on climate vulnerability mitigation strategies.
ConclusionThe study concludes significant spatial variability in climate and nutrition research. It highlights a shift from physical to multidimensional perspectives and advocates for a spatial equity approach to address the publication gap between High-Income and Low- and Middle-Income Countries.
