<p>Urban flooding is one of the most pressing climate-induced hazards affecting cities in the Global South, disproportionately impacting informal settlements&#xa0;- places already characterized by insecure tenure, inadequate infrastructure, and high social vulnerability. As conventional, top-down flood management approaches continue to fall short in addressing the needs of these marginalized communities, Community-based Adaptation (CBA) is a promising alternative that leverages local knowledge, grassroots organizing, and participatory governance to build resilience. Using the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) methodology, this paper presents a rapid review of 15 peer-reviewed studies to examine the scope, effectiveness, and challenges of CBA strategies for flooding in informal settlements across the Global South. The review identifies a wide range of structural (e.g., reblocking, drainage systems, raised latrines) and non-structural (e.g., early warning systems, savings groups, community mapping) community-based adaptation measures, alongside innovations in participatory GIS, citizen science, and mobile-based flood communication. Socio-economic and cultural strategies like livelihood diversification, gendered adaptation practices, and indigenous knowledge integration, play a vital role in shaping community based adaptive capacities. Institutional dimensions reveal that successful CBA is often embedded in multi-actor partnerships between communities, NGOs, and local governments, though scaling remains constrained by limited funding, weak urban governance, and legal exclusion. The study contributes to the urban resilience discourse by emphasizing the political and social dimensions of adaptation in contexts of informality. It argues that while CBA holds significant potential for locally grounded and inclusive flood adaptation, its long-term impact depends on its integration into formal disaster risk frameworks, sustained community engagement, and equitable resource allocation. The paper concludes with policy recommendations for embedding CBA within climate-resilient urban planning and outlines future research directions focused on sustainability, impact assessment, and the intersection of technology and justice in grassroots adaptation.</p>
