<p>Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) have gained global prominence, calling for the “promotion of prosperity while protecting the planet.” Achieving the SDGs presents numerous challenges and is a long-term process fraught with risks and constraints which have been subject of earlier research. In this paper, we examine a constraint that has not received adequate attention in the literature. Achieving the SDGs requires robust organizational structures and high institutional quality within both the public (such as state organizations, schools and universities) and private (firms) sectors to undertake the necessary actions. However, to date, neither sector has adequately implemented the necessary changes to their institutional structures. As such, without the proper organizational and administrative measures in place, achievement of the SDGs and the achievement of these goals seem highly risky. In this paper, in order to improve the effectiveness of implementation of SDG actions and increase the likelihood of their achievement, we propose the introduction of a new administrative position within both the public and private sectors: the Chief Sustainability Officer. The CSO would be primarily responsible for the design and implementation of strategies and policies relevant to the achievement of SDGs.</p>
