As a sustainable alternative to synthetic dyes, <i>I. tinctoria</i> mitigates environmental hazards, enhances soil health through nitrogen fixation, and supports biodiversity. Its versatile applications span agriculture, industry, and healthcare, with uses ranging from eco-friendly dye production to bioenergy generation and medicinal benefits. Key aspects include its adaptability to low-fertility soils, contributions to soil restoration, and its significance in regenerative dyeing for textiles. Despite its historical decline due to synthetic dyes, <i>I. tinctoria</i> is witnessing a revival driven by global demand for natural products. Challenges such as limited genetic diversity, climate impacts, and competition with synthetic dyes are discussed alongside innovations in agronomy, extraction methods, and crop residue management. The review advocates for integrated research, sustainable practices, and stakeholder collaboration to harness <i>I. tinctoria's</i> full potential, fostering resilient supply chains and supporting rural economies.
