Black Soldier Fly (Hermetia illucens) Larvae as Bioconverters of Spent Drosophila Media

Laboratory research generates substantial environmental waste, including biowaste of feed media from model organisms such as Drosophila flies. Considering the widespread use of Drosophila flies, identifying alternative methods for repurposing spent Drosophila media is a step towards more sustainable laboratory practices. This study investigates the potential of Hermetia illucens (black soldier fly; BSF) larvae as a bioconversion solution for spent Drosophila media. We conducted controlled experiments to assess BSF performance (e.g., larval growth and development, adult weight and lifespan) on three diet treatments: the Gainesville diet (a widely used BSF reference diet), fresh Drosophila media, and spent Drosophila media. Our findings indicate that while BSF larvae grew around four times faster during the first four experimental days on the Gainesville diet (F2,474 = 341.99, P < 0.0001), they attained around 40% larger peak larval weights (F2,9 = 15.71, P < 0.05) and around 80% larger adult body sizes (F2,68 = 64.1, P < 0.0001) when fed with Drosophila media (fresh or spent). Development time was around 30% shorter on the Gainesville diet (X2 = 319.9, df = 2, P < 0.0001), but both fresh and spent Drosophila media yielded comparable larval growth (P = 0.35) and adult lifespan (|z|= 0.48, P = 0.87), suggesting that spent Drosophila media could be employed as a growing substrate for BSF. Given the extensive use of Drosophila in biological research, our results suggest the potential of BSF larvae for sustainable waste management in fly laboratories.
