摘要

The proposed work presents various novel alternatives method for utilization of press mud derived from sugar mill. Press mud is the compressed sugar mill waste produced from filtration of cane juice. Disposal of solid wastes at landfilling sites is a temporary solution to tackle waste management and environmental crises. The novelty of the present work lies in the fact that, landfilling is not taken as alternatives as have been done in the past, because the best selected landfill site remains on the earth and continue to contribute in pollution which leads to degradation of environment. This landfilling concept of waste disposal deviates from the goal of mitigating the harmful effect of industrial pollution, and, eventually promotes environmental risk. The various alternatives for waste utilization considered are manure industry, bio generation plant, construction industry, co-generation plant. The press mud produced are decomposed due to aerobic composting resulting in production of manure, rich in plant nutrients. The nutrients enriched press mud is used as a manure for various crops such as maize, rice, wheat, and sugarcane. Moreover, the press mud has calorific value of 14 MJ/Kg and hence used as excellent fuel either in separate biogas plant or in the co-generation plant (Power plant of same sugar mill). The alternatives proposed are based on sustainable aspect, and are ranked using Multi Criteria Decision Making (MCDM) approaches. Intuitionistic Fuzzy (IF) - Technique for Order Preference by Similarity to Ideal Solution (IF-TOPSIS) approach has been applied to rank the alternatives. Moreover, IF- COmplex PRoportional Assessment (IF-COPRAS) approach has also been implemented to check and verify the ranking results. Alternative (A1) with relative coefficient 0.5877 is first sustainable utilisation method, followed by A3, A4, A2 with relative coefficient − 0.4061, 0.3241, 0.3192 respectively, when IF-TOPSIS approach is implemented. With the implementation of IF-COPRAS approach, alternative (A4) with utility degree score 0.3960 is first ranked and prioritised followed by A1, A2, A3 with utility degree score − 90.1919, 75.4704, 54.5675 respectively. Decision making on the selection of alternative is done based on feasibility of the alternatives under considered criteria. Utilisation of press mud in farm as manure (press mud turned manure) is rich in nutrients such as nitrogen, phosphorous and potash enhance the yield and quality of crops and hence boost the agricultural productivity. When press mud is used as fuel, it produces low carbon as compared to fossil fuel, which reduces the dependency on fossil fuel there by support sustainable, environment centric and symbiotic relations between farm and factory. In essence, all the alternatives contribute to sustainable waste management as its utilisation does not produce by product which is harmful for the environment.
