摘要

A core direction of the European Union’s (EU) climate-related policies is the elimination of fossil fuel use for electricity production, moving towards clean, renewable energy production and storage infrastructures that incorporate circular economy principles. However, such a transition is not an easy process for countries which are highly dependent on coal for energy production. Thus, a holistic approach is necessary to design an effective transition pathway that incorporates the perceptions and needs of local communities in regions which are highly affected by coal mining and the operation of lignite thermal power plants. In this context, this paper conducted a questionnaire survey of 163 participants from a coal dependent region in Greece. The results indicate that local residents have different opinions on various issues related to the decarbonization of the energy system. Also, the impact of the energy transition process on the respondents’ quality of life, as well as their stance on the ongoing transition, had an effect on their perceptions of the importance of its impacts.
