Behavioral Drivers and E-Waste Valorization Opportunities in HEIs: A Dual-Method Study

The rapid proliferation of technology among Higher Educational Institutions (HEIs) stakeholders, presents significant challenges and opportunities for electronic waste (e-waste) Valorization. This Study integrates bibliometric analysis(2000–2024) and empirical behavioral research to investigate e-waste management behaviors and valorization opportunities in HEIs, guided by Circular economy (CE), Lifecycle Thinking(LCT), and the Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB). The bibliometric study, using VOSviewer, revealed research clustering around recycling technologies and material recovery, with a limited focus on behavior-driven valorization in campus environments. The empirical survey of 161 students in Tiruchirappalli, India identified significant awareness gaps, infrastructural deficiencies, and socio-demographic influences on e-waste disposal behaviors. While 80% of students recognized e-waste hazards, only 40% utilized formal recycling, highlighting an awareness-action gap. Statistical analyses reveal a significant correlation between Socioeconomic factors and e-waste disposal practices (P < 0.05), with lower-income groups prioritizing device durability. The study proposes a three-pillar CE framework for HEIs, incorporating design for durability, campus-derived valorization models (e-waste kiosks, student repair hubs, EPR partnerships), and curriculum integration of CE and LCT modules. These findings align with international best practices and address critical gaps in formal recycling infrastructure in rapidly digitizing economies like India. This dual-method study contributes a replicable framework for integrating behavioral insights and CE models in sustainable campus waste management for responsible consumption and production (SDG: 12), offering operational, educational, and policy pathways toward circularity within higher education systems.
